Challenge Yourself to End Hunger

Accept the 2014 Food Shelf Challenge from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless and Willmar Area Food Shelf this July.

You can help the families we serve make great meal time memories
What if you had to decide which of your children will eat today because there isn’t enough food in the house for everyone?
Summer should be a time for relaxation and vacation. But for many Minnesota families, summer is a stressful time. With children out of school and out of school meal programs, many parents worry about how to feed everyone in the house. And no child should go without food.

Make a bigger impact on hunger in Kandiyohi County this July.
Every day, Minnesota food shelves serve 3,500 children. Last July Willmar Area Food Shelf served approximately 800 families and the New London Area Food Shelf served about 35 families. You can make a real difference this year, by donating throughout the month of July.
The more you donate, the larger our food shelf’s grant from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless will be. The challenge funds will proportionally match your donation. Your donation will go farther due to our buying power. We can purchase food from our food bank for pennies on the pound. $55 will purchase 450 lbs. of food and feed 3 families of 3 for 6 days.

Thank you Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless.

Since 1986, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has targeted millions of dollars to strategically fight hunger in Minnesota. Open Your Heart funds the purchase and transfer of more than one million pounds of fresh produce, meat and dairy products every year through Hunger Solutions Minnesota. Open Your Heart also provides grants for food shelves and food banks to get the equipment they need— like freezers, shelving and trucks—to be able to serve the growing number of Minnesotans who can’t afford enough food for their families.

Summer surge at food shelves

This is a segment that was recently on FOX 9 news about families struggling to have enough food in the summer as their children are home and they are needing to provide 10 extra meals a week. The Willmar Area Food Shelf experiences this very same surge of families in need as expressed in this video clip. Please share with your family, friends and neighbors who may not think about or realize this very local hunger issue happens right here in Willmar and the surrounding communities. If you are able to help out with a food or cash donation please contact the Willmar Area Food Shelf to learn more or make a donation.
